Deaf Community

UN Development Goal 4 and IT Skills Audit

According to 2030 Agenda for United Nation Sustainability Development Goal 4, we, society should ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all persons with disabilities. In South Africa, most people living with disabilities are still denied equitable access to education, information, health care, job opportunities and civil engagement as well as technological solutions and their benefits are not fully explored (Stats SA).

As the country plans its skills picture for the next couple of years, it’s important to take cognizance of the global technology trends such as coding often referred to programming which has a potential of contributing to the competitiveness of South Africa.

In order to remain competitive and crate opportunities for young people, this will require a new generation of hardware and software engineers, graphic designers, engineers, solution architects, business analysts, account managers who have skills to explore and exploit future technologies.

About Deaf Youth

According to the census, there are about (4) million Deaf and hard of hearing people in South Africa (SA). The unemployment rate in SA is around 30%, within this high unemployment rate, about 60% of Deaf are unemployed.

South Africa continues to fall behind its African peers in relation to providing equitable opportunities; particularly, the marginalized and people living with disabilities. Getting an education is a challenge for the Deaf. Some of reasons are few than 15 schools for the Deaf that offer Grade 12 and fewer teachers understand sign language in schools for the Deaf. .
